Importing - The Importance Of Research!

Considering Importing a German Spitz?
Please think carefully and do plenty of research first as there are so many readily available via various online sites but not all are what they seem.

We have seen a steady stream of supposed "Klein" imports arriving from FCI countries where upon seeing their pedigrees it is very apparant that they are primarily Pomeranian-bred or worse still, actually Pomeranians themselves that grew too big so were re-registered as German Spitz Klein.
This practice is not allowed in the UK so any resulting offspring can only be registered as the breed it's parents are, regardless of it's size and a dog remains the breed it was born as.

The Pomeranian has differences in their breed standard to our German Spitz so not only are they smaller, they also have more domed skulls, shorter muzzles and rounder eyes plus other subtle differences so they do look quite different.
There is also the issue of serious health problems and many of the breed are sadly affected by Alopecia-X (Black Skin Disease), Syringomyelia or Chiari Malformation which could very quickly and easily decimate our numerically small breed here were these Pom lines to become prevalent in the breed.

Whilst we can all recognise a need for new blood to keep a numerically small genepool healthy, those new lines must be chosen very carefully. Breeders have worked very hard since the breed was recognised by our KC to try and stabilise size and type and to maintain or improve on quality so it is the responsibility of anyone importing to do their utmost to ensure these imported dogs don't undo all those years of work.

There are lots of online resources now to help with researching pedigrees of dogs from all over the world and our admin team are happy to help with pedigree research if needed.
