Outcrossing - Breeding For the Future

by Pat Beard

I remember well, attending a German Spitz Seminar where an eminent Geneticist was one of the guest speakers. His talk was very informative, speaking about how it was all right to inbreed for several generations, as this is how to keep type etc.
Unfortunately I don't think that this Gentleman had done much research into the beginnings of the German Spitz as, as we all know, we started out with a very small breed base; just four Import dogs which were mated to Poms, to give both sizes their initial breed stock. Their progeny having then been measured and placed on the relevant register.

At the time of the lecture we were already several years into breeding from this original stock.
It is important that a partial or total outcross is used to ensure the wellbeing of our beautiful breeds. I can't remember the formula used, but it is something like three in and one out.

In a relatively small based Breed like ours, if the outcrosses are available and there are now several, (perhaps more in Kleins than Mittels) an outcross can be beneficial as it weakens any problems that may be hiding.
The puppies that result from an outcross mating may not be to your own liking, but, if you are interested in more than winning with this Generation, they can then be put to any dog of your choosing.

Above all remember that we are Guardians of our two breeds. What we do now will reflect on us in years to come.
