Critique

Many thanks to the German Spitz Breeders and Owners Club for inviting me to judge Kleins at this lovely show held in conjunction with Leeds. I had some quality exhibits to judge and was very pleased with my winners. Thanks to my very able steward Lisa Moir, who kept the ring running smoothly and thanks to all exhibitors for being so sporting.

Puppy Dog (2, 1abs)

1st Bagshaw’s Bagshire’s Freddy Flintstone - Confident cream sable baby of just 6 months. Taking everything in his stride and oozing confidence for one so young. Presents a tidy little shape and is of pleasing size. Just a shade bum high at the moment but what do you expect at this young age? Lovely wedge shaped head with good flat top skull, moderate amount of stop and a good length of muzzle finishing to clean, black lips. Obliquely set oval eyes of good size fitting his face well. Neat little ears, erect and triangular which he used well. Nice neck fitting into a good lay of shoulder, chest still to develop, forelegs of correct bone, catlike feet. Square little body, well ribbed back to a short loin. Hindquarters of good angles, matching that of his fore. Coat coming in well. High set tail well curled over his back. Moved with such confidence. BPIB

Post Graduate Dog (1)
1st Bagshaw’s Shiva’s Step To Kingdom - Black & Tan 20 month old with super temperament and enjoying his time greatly! A livewire and making his handler work! He is of good size and presents a square outline. Handsome wedge shaped head of good proportions. Lovely dark eyes, almond in shape and of good size and set. Erect, triangular ears well set on his flat skull. Good amount of neck set well into a sound front assembly. Enough chest, forelegs straight and of quality bone, neat, catlike feet. Compact, square body with good spring of rib carrying well back to a short, muscular loin. Level topline kept at all times. Moderate bend to stifles and sturdy, parallel hocks. High set tail with profuse hair well curled over back. Abundant double coat well presented. Moved with brisk action.

Limit Dog (2, 1abs)
1st Crystalclear Bobbee Dazzler - 2 year old orange sable. Fairly square outline and of correct size. Masculine, wedge shaped head, flat skull, marked stop and a strong muzzle of good length. Well pigmented nose, lips and eye rims. Dark, obliquely set almond eyes of correct size. Earset perhaps a touch wide but triangular and carried erect. Moderate amount of neck into a correct shoulder placement, enough forechest and straight forelegs of good bone. Compact body with well sprung ribs carried back to a firm loin. Hindquarters matching that of his foreangles, moderate bend to stifles and sturdy parallel hocks. High set tail well curled over his level topline. Double coat which he had plenty of, presented well and of good texture. Moved soundly.

Open Dog (3)

1st Francis & Pearce’s Ch Longsdales Luv Me More - Well turned out black of 3 years old presenting a lovely shape and outline. Well sized and under the measure. Balanced head of good proportions, wedge shape with broad, flat skull, marked stop, clean cheeks and a strong muzzle of good length. Black nose, lips and eye rims. Expressive, oval eye, obliquely set and fitting his handsome face well. Neat, triangular ears, erect and well set. Clean neck of good length into a correct front assembly. Good lay of shoulder, forelegs straight with quality bone, cat-like feet. Nice chest, well sprung ribs carried well back to a short, strong loin. Moderate tuck up. Hindquarters well muscled with correct angulation, moderate bend to stifles and strong, parallel hocks. High set tail well curled over his level topline. Profuse double coat of good texture presented beautifully. Moved soundly from all angles with brisk action. RBD.

2nd Andrew’s Ch Claran Edge Of Glory - Smaller made dog than 1st, yet with good substance for his size. Another black of good type who I liked a lot, just preferred 1st’s movement today. He is compact and well balanced giving a square-ish outline. Masculine, wedge shaped head, broad and flat skull, moderate stop, muzzle of correct length, clean finish to lips. Well pigmented. Oval eyes of good size, obliquely set with black eye rims. High set, neat, triangular ears carried perfectly erect. Nice neck into a sound front assembly. Forelegs straight and strong. Compact body, well ribbed back to a muscular, short loin, moderate amount of tuckup. Well made hindquarters with angles matching that of his fore. High set tail with good curl and covered in profuse hair. Moved briskly.

3rd Moore’s Dream Team Stars Irresistibly Black - Completing a trio of blacks in this class. Handsome headed boy, broad flat skull, proportionate and wedge shaped. Expressive oval eyes, dark and set obliquely. Nice earset. Neck of good length into a moderate lay of shoulder, ok for bone and forechest. Well bodied with good ribbing, loin just a fraction long making him look a little off-square.  Tail is high set and he carries it well over a level topline. Well muscled rear with moderate bend to stifles and sturdy parallel hocks. Profuse double coat of correct texture. Another sound mover.

Champion Dog (2, 1abs)

1st Andrew’s Ch Claran Court Your Breath - Eyecatching cream dog who demands your attention. Beautifully balanced outline, square and well constructed. Handled to get the best out of him today. His head in masculine without a trace of coarseness, typically wedge shaped with flat skull, definite stop, clean cheeks and muzzle of good length. Super pigmentation throughout with black nose, lips and eye rims. Expressive, oval eyes obliquely set in his handsome face. Neat, erect, triangular ears well set. Well crested neck of correct length fitting seamlessly into a sound front assembly. Straight forelegs of good bone, neat, catlike feet. Square, compact body, fit and well muscled throughout with well sprung ribs. Strong, taut loin, level topline held at all times. Hindquarters strong and sound with correct angulation. High set tail well curled over his back. Profuse, abundant double coat of correct texture. Moved soundly and typically from all angles. Delighted to award him BD & BOB

Veteran Dog (1)
1st Jackson & Minshall’s Ch Perrymere Just Bertie JW - Cream dog of almost 9 years old, completely defying his age. Pleasing outline, good size and substance. Handsome head of good proportions, correct skull to muzzle ratios, clean cheeks and good pigment. Dark eyes, well set and of good size, perhaps a little rounder than my ideal. Triangular ears, small and erect well set on his flat skull. Enough neck into a moderate lay of shoulder, good width and depth to chest, straight forelegs of quality bone. Compact, fairly square body, well ribbed back, strong, short loin, good topline. Hind angles matching that of his fore. Well presented coat of good texture. Moved briskly and soundly.

Puppy Bitch (1)
1st Andrew’s Claran Enchanted - Pretty Gold puppy who is good for type and size. Good head, wedge shaped with a flat skull, defined stop, muzzle of good length with well fitting lips. Well pigmented nose, lips and eye rims. Obliquely set, oval eyes, dark and expressive. Neat little erect ears well placed on her skull. Clean neck into a sound front, chest developing well for age, forequarters straight and of quality bone. Compact body, just looking slightly off-square at the moment but has time on her side to balance out. Well ribbed back to a short, firm loin. Hindquarters sound with moderate angulation matching that of her forequarters. Lovely high set tail curled over her back. Correct puppy coat which was presented well. Moved confidently. RBB & BPB

Post Graduate Bitch (1)
1st Beck’s Rosco’s Breeze - Cream Sable lady who ticked the boxes for size. A little stronger in head than my ideal but still wedge shaped with a flat skull, definite stop and a good length to muzzle. Well pigmented throughout. Oval eyes set obliquely and of good size, colour harmonising with her coat. Ears triangular and erect, well set. Could have a little more neck, shoulders moderately laid, forelegs of good length and quality bone. Compact body, well ribbed back with good spring and a level topline kept at all times. Well muscled hindquarters with moderate bend to stifles and sturdy parallel hocks. High set tail well curled over her back. Moved ok.

Open Bitch (1)
1st Hickson’s Ch Claran Court of Delights at Kichigai - A very worthy champion. Cream 2 year old who presents a balanced outline. Good size with substance. Feminine expression with a wedge shaped head, flat top skull, clean cheeks, defined stop and a proportionate length of muzzle. Well pigmented lips, nose and eye rims. Well sized oval eyes of correct set giving a pleasing expression. Neat ears, erect and triangular well set and used well. Good neck into a sound front assembly. Compact, square little body, well sprung ribs carried well back to a short, muscular loin. Hindquarters strong and sound. High tailset well curled over her back. Correct double coat presented well. Moved soundly and briskly from all angles. A clear winner of BB.

Special Hannah Rosebury-Lowe Memorial Class (kleins) (6,3)
A class of 3 top quality exhibits whom I was privileged to judge

1st CH Claran Court Your Breath (Andrew)
3½ year old male This boy was in top form today and handled to advantage. A glamorous cream with an attractive head, good mouth and black pigment. Lovely for size and square proportions with enough bone and cat like feet. Abundant straight coat which had a good texture and was well presented. He moved briskly and correctly in all directions.

2nd CH, LV CH, LVJ CH Biggi Best Beast With Longsdale (IMP LAT) (Francis & Pearce)
Black 3 year old male whom I feel he will be a real asset to the breed with his substance and excellent breed type. There's nothing 'pommy' about him. He has a masculine head with a kind expression, jet black coat of the correct texture and excellent bone. To top it off his movement just flowed effortlessly across the ring.

3rd IR CH, IRJR CH, INTJR CH, CELTIC 26, CELTIC JR 26 Longsdale No More Drama (Francis & Pearce)
Black bitch 22 months old She has all the attributes you would want in a German Spitz, from her neat ears, correct mouth and dark eye. Enough neck into a solid, well-made body with a high tailset. Movement was brisk and sound but she seemed a little unsettled today

Best in Show

CH Longsdales Look At Me Now (Francis & Pearce)
Black male, 2 years old - WOW!! I had to look at him and couldn't stop. His head is masculine without being coarse, he has a lovely dark eye, gentle expression, correct mouth and neat ears. Excellent forehand with matching rear and high set tail. He is well off for bone and has tight cat-like feet. Movement is so brisk and true. He has a jet black stand off coat which just sparkled. Yes he is topsize but I found him under the measure. Cannot wait to see him fully mature with a touch more coat. Loved him.

CH Claran Court Your Breath (Andrew)
(1st in specials class above - made for a tough decision)

Best Puppy In Show

Bagshire's Freddy Flintstone (Bagshaw)
Cream Sable male of 6 months Very much the baby but I thought he coped with the terrible wind noise from the tapes and inside the marquee extremely well. Good mouth with the correct scissor bite, his coat coming through nicely with excellent pigment. He's a touch bum high which is to be expected at this age but he moved out all ways with joie de vivre.

Best Veteran In Show

CH Longsdale's Rebel Rouser at Cwrtafon JW (OSW) (Francis, Pearce & Roberts)
Black male aged 7½ years. I've had the pleasure of judging this boy before and gave him BIS so no hiding the fact I like him. He is ageing well and most of my comments still apply. He is well made, well balanced and has a  lovely expression. His movement is still all there although he was slightly crabbing today. The veteran klein pushed him all the way.
