Critique

It is always an honour to be asked to judge your own breed at a club show. I would like to thank all the exhibitors who voted for me. I had a few surprises. D's that met the measure or indeed did not go under the measure and a d that has a huge coat with no body underneath may look beautiful, but it does not make a German Spitz. One has to look for good construction and movement and I found quite a few who lacked bone. The quality of the b's was v poor and I only found a handful of b's I considered worthy of any top awards. We need to review where we are going and remember we are German Spitz. If the Kennel Club had decided to name our breed the Victorian Pomeranian then the story would have been v different. My BOB I considered to be a type to be proud of and certainly one to follow, she looked v typical of the German Spitz, I saw after visiting the Spitz show in Amsterdam many years ago. I was v pleased the Referee considered my judgment to be true to the breed and gave her BIS. GERMAN SPITZ (K): VD 1 Parden's Limburg City Slicker Mit Dunbrook. B/w, 7 yr old, well marked parti, good wedge to head with equal length, dark eye, neat ear, well constructed with good bone and moved well. A d before his time that I have always liked. MPD 1 Furber's Holbain Nobody's Fool. Promising boy, nicely marked, good pigment, head of correct shape, neat ear, moderate length to neck with straight topline. A little unsettled and v much a baby; 2 Hayward's Holbain Cool Fool. Br/w, another nice lad from this kennel, good head, ear not as good as one. Pigment correct for coat colour, nicely bodied with good bone. Again needs to settle; 3 Edburton's Frisky Fox. PD 1 Morgan's Dare To Dream Of Ahlen. Black/sable in good coat but disappointed in body and I would like more bone, good head and ear, dark eye, moderate length to neck, lovely square outline with excellent tailset, turn of stifle without exaggeration, which I feel is creeping into the breed, beautifully presented. JD 1 Andrew's Portierble Sirius Black From Runfold. Black another to be admired, wonderful outline, super head, neat ear, good mouth, would like a little more bone, coat of right texture but just let himself down on the move; 2 Hugh's Candease Back To The Future. Black of good type, not quite as square as one, dark eye, ears let him down. Well bodied with good bone, tail nicely placed over back. A little unsettled on the move, v close between these two boys. PGD 1 Gillies' Kartmel Dark Angel. Sorry to much background noise, could not hear what I said on my tape; 2 Mole's Chilite Prairie Storm. This boy would not let me go over him so difficult to assess as you need to put your hands on to see what is under the coat. LD 1 Nalor's Terendak Bubble Top. Cream, this boy has improved with age, in lovely coat of correct texture, neat ear, dark eye, good head, black pigment, giving a good expression, well bodied with excellent square outline. Tail flat on his back, not too much stifle and with good bone, front could be a little more controlled, cat feet which we do not see often. Shame he had to meet my CC winner, RDCC; 2 Morgen's Enzo Z Temynch Noci At Cyfelin. W/s d of surprises, found this b v nice, lovely body, good outline, coat texture correct with nice tailset, ample bone and not over angulated, moved well; 3 Clark's Stonelight Enzo. OD 1 Palmer-Jones' Ch Stonelight Dashing Dezel. Black, well what can I say? Head of equal proportion, correct fill under eye, giving a neat wedge, dark eye of correct shape, small triangular ears, giving that soft expression, neck of moderate length fitting well into correct lay of shoulder, not found v often. Straight front, short in back, good tailset, neat cat feet, nicely sprung rib. I have seen this boy let down by movement previously, but not today, he did it all, BD; 2 Metcalfe's Flactem Domino. B/w I love this boy so like my Domino. Good head and neat ear, dark eye, so square in outline, in lovely coat, good bone and body, just let himself down on his rear movement, I have seen him move better; 3 Furber's Pberitz Cozmopolitan At Holbain. VB 1 Trendle's Ch Lusam Beatty Romanze. Black, nice feminine head, neat ear, dark eye, nice outline, good tailset, just would like a little more of her. MPB 1 Furber's Holbain Foxy Fool. Cream baby girl, nice feminine wedge head, dark correct eye, good mouth, nice body with good bone and cat feet. A little unsure on the day but handled herself well; 2 Poole's Timberwolf Anisha. Nice head, good pigment, in good coat, v pretty just would like more of her. JB 1 Hughs' Candease Blithe Spirit. Brown sable, lovely colour, nice shape to her head, ear a little on the large size, good body shape, ample bone for size, tailset good, showed well, again would like a little more of her; 2 Sheasby's Baobab Gipsy In Black. Black, good wedged head, dark eye, moderate length to neck, short in back, good tailset, well bodied would like a little more bone, showed well. PGB 1 Hill's Edburton Llyngoes At Cyfelin. Cream sable, v sound little girl, good body, nice bone, head not so pleasing to me, good tailset, moved and showed well; 2 Goodwin's Roydenzone Just Jay. Black, sweet feminine spitzy head, dark eye, good body shape with a good outline. Would prefer more bone; 3 Trendle's Parti Popper. LD 1 Bridgen and Kimber's Stonelight Electra. Black, this is what I have been waiting for, a b with substance, head strong but feminine, nice wedge of equal length, eye dark of good shape, ear neat, good mouth. Neck nicely placed and of correct length, good shoulder, well ribbed body, could be a tad shorter in back tail, flat on back, bone to be envied. Cat feet and beautifully presented, showed her socks off. My BOB and went on to win a well deserved BIS. I am sure she will gain her title v soon; 2 Hughs' Dourhu Choaholic At Candease. Br/w, love this girl, another to be proud of, just a shame she met 1. Love her head, good body with a nice shape a little out of coat, v sound on the move, her second RCC under me; 3 Cilite's Painted Feather. OB 1 Bradbury's Wychlea Ursula Brown. Brown, nice type, good wedge head, pigment to go with colour but still quite dark, nicely bodied with good bone as they all have from this kennel, a loose tail just spoilt her outline and chances of higher awards today; 2 Kartmel's Whirlwind. Black, so disappointed with this girl, I saw her come in the ring and I thought she would be my CC winner, she is all I wish for but on the day did not give her best, loved her head, nicely bodied with good bone, she just held herself all hunched up today and totally spoilt her outline; 3 Oberitz' Glamour Glitz.

EVA HILL SPECIAL AWARDS

KLEIN

OD 1. Chamber’s, Ch. Nosregor Hot Shot for Musique Sh CM. 4 years old classic brown boy of superb type. Excellent head qualities. Keen attentive expression. Darkest of eyes, ear set good and alert. Strong neck of good length, but not over done, as I did notice some were rather too long. Front angles with long bones set to perfection, which aloud for good forward reach. Nice tight feet. Elbows well tucked in. Top and under line good, especially topline which was firm, well muscled and level at all times. Tail set high and well feathered. Nice square conformation into excellent rear angles. Sound from all directions and taken at just the right pace to compliment his size. BD and Best Klein.
2. Kimber and Brigden’s, Ch. Wychlea Ludo at Stonelight. 4 years old black who stood showed his heart out from start to finish. Slightly longer cast than the winner, but carrying good breed qualities. Nice eye and male head and confident expression, good bite, tight lips, good head carriage on the move which is essential in most breeds, especially Spitz types. I found him sound in all directions with tight feet, but above all a good depth of coat. Enough bone to please which was lacking in some exhibits. Nice one.
3. Pardens’, Desaria Skylark Mit Dunbrook.

OB 1. Thomas’s, Gamecards Christmas Fairy. 14 months old shaded cream. Out of coat and slightly long cast but showing good head qualities, ultra feminine, soft expression, well set ears. Once in coat I’m sure will produce a completely different picture. Good angles front and rear. Moved ok. Just needs to be motivated a little to be on top form. BB.

Thank you one and all.
