Critique

I would like to thank the German Spitz Club committee for the invitation, and a very warm welcome, and also the exhibitors for the lovely atmosphere at the ringside. I was surprised to find a big difference in depth of quality between dogs and bitches. The dogs were weaker by far, a worrying sign when sound and typical dogs are in the minority. On the other hand, the bitches had a lot of good specimens throughout the classes, and more than one or two outstanding ones. I often hear people sitting at the ringside comment that a judge was 'not judging to type', it is a sad fact that there simply are not enough dogs of any one type, to me it is a priority that the dog not only looks like a German Spitz but is also sound, and these qualities were spread among dogs of somewhat different type. I was thrilled when my Klein Best of Breed won Best In Show. VD(2) 1 Highmoor's Ch Kartmel Legolas. An 11 year old black male with all his teeth, a rare thing for a Spitz to retain all teeth into old age. This dog had a proper chin and good gum depth which many do not. If the jaw is selected for a narrow and shallow finish then shallow gums and tooth loss is inevitable. He is up to height which gives him a dominant look in the ring. He is cobby and compact giving him a slightly short stepping action in profile but he is sound and accurate to and fro. His coat was full and well presented and he performed like a star. 2 Trendle's Lusam Crispin Blunt. Another good black of 9 years, has a lovely well muscled frame and stepped out well around the ring, however, he was toeing in to and fro. Some dogs seemed to find the floor surface difficult to handle. MPD(2) 1 Hamers' Clarmers Diamond Mischief. A very cute 6 month old black baby, good head and expression, dark eye and well set ears. He moved very well in profile. At the moment his coat is all over the place, but time will sort that out. 2 Norkett's Applebanks Goldfinger. A 7 month old very glamorously coated gold boy, plenty of bone and substance, lovely small ears. He was not as free moving as the winner in profile, and he lifted the measure. PD(2) 1 Francis & Pearce's Longsdale's Woody Win. BPD & RBPIB. A lovely chocolate boy of 10 months, with beautiful bone and feet, a well set and carried tail, good coat and masculine head. He has superb action in profile movement and owns the ring. 2 Williams, Francis, Pearce & Williams' Longsdale's Lets Go Trebettyn. 7 month cream with a huge coat, he was right up to size with strong bone, he needs to strengthen all through when moving, hopefully will come together with maturity. JD(2) 1 Halligan's Nardik Eclipse. RBPD. A 10 month old with good bone and a huge coat, attractive head with well set and sized eyes and neat ears. He moved well around the ring, and also to and fro. 2 Pallet's Chilite Shadows Moon. 15 month old boy, smaller and lighter boned than winner, he has a compact body, well set and carried tail, slightly round eyes. His movement was not as strong due to a rather upright shoulder. PGD(3, 1) 1 Jackson & Minshall's Holbain Just Like Bill. This class presented a dilemma, the winner was a 19 month old glamorous and heavily coated cream, with super pigment, a lovely Spitz wedge and beautiful expression. He had good bone and was correctly angulated allowing him to move freely around the ring.He lifted the measure, but could not be denied. 2 Serman's Wyndlee Twizzle Stick By Tymy. Second was a smaller black dog with enough bone, a good tail set and carriage, but steeper in upper arm giving a slightly high stepping movement. 3 Morgan's Ahlenagen's Fancy That. LD(6, 3) 1 Halligan's Nardik New Moon At Icabel JW. RCC, a dog I would love to own, he is a gorgeous gold boy with a lovely head and expression, a dark eye which is slightly round, small well set ears and a big coat. He is compact and cobby but with the angulation to carry him freely around the ring on his excellent bone and feet. Sadly he looks bored and disinterested in showing himself off, which spoils the overall picture. If his owners can get him to enjoy himself, even be a little bit cheeky, he would go far. 2 Serman's Rochedo Bill The Badger By Tymy. A two and a half year old black and white particolour, lacking his jacket today. He is a good size with good bone and strong stifles. He is slightly 'soft' and rounded in head and eye, while still being very attractive. 3 Kemp's Orion Black Dazzle At Yanlan. OD(5, 1) I really enjoyed judging this class, all four dogs were looking good and were beautifully presented, confident and happy. 1 Francis & Pearce's Ch Longsdales Willie Win JW. DCC, a most glamorous 2 yr old pale cream dog with a stunning head and expression with the darkest of pigment. He has excellent bone and feet, strong stifles and a good shoulder placement, all enabling him to step out around the ring as if he owned it. Would prefer a smaller ear, but WOW, what a dog. 2 Norkett's Applebanks Thruppence. Another free moving boy of 2 yrs. Cream with typical pigment but a lovely dark eye colour. He is smaller than first, and is another one who needs to learn to 'pop' when he is in the ring. 3 Shepherd's Chilite Indian Cheif. VB(3) 1 Trendle's Ch Lusam Parti Popper Ch CM. BVIB, a seven and a half year old black and white particolour, out of coat but she has nothing to hide. She shows herself off beautifully, and moves soundly and with purpose. 2 Trendle's Lusam Super Spats. 12 yr old black girl with white trim, her head is attractive with good Spitz qualities, but not moving to her full potential today. 3 Halligan's Northern Light At Icabel. MPB(2) Another class I enjoyed greatly with a 'perfect lady' versus a 'cheeky monkey'. 1 Hill's Cyfelin Solitaire. BPB & BPIB. Two adorable puppies with the winner being more mature on the day. A glamorous 7 month old gold with black mask, she has a beautiful expression with a promising Spitz wedge, she has enough bone and carries herself well. She needs to stregthen in front but a lovely baby indeed. 2 Hamer's Clarmers Diamond Bear. A little monkey, so mischievous and full of character. She is just 6 months old with a pretty lilac colour, a well set and carried tail. She was confident and cheeky and has everything promising for the future. PB(4, 1) 1 Hamer's Clarmers Gems'A Diamond. RBPB, this blue baby girl is what I would call an honest and nothing to hide prospect, with an excellent temperament. Hope she does not grow on, but went under the measure. She was a well balanced girl and carried herself proudly around the ring. 2 Trendle's Lusam Twinkling Star. The opposite end of the scale, a petite blue girl of 11 months who is very pretty in head and expression, would prefer slightly stronger bone and more forward reach but she is an attractive puppy. 3 Serman's Wychlea Lady In The Mirror By Tymy. JB(2, 1) 1 and 2 withheld. 3 Tonks' Oberitz September Song. I gave my feedback to the owner about this girl on the day. PGB(5, 1) 1 Penwarne's Sheldamar Voodoo Doll. A 2 yr old black and silver bitch with a super outline on the move, which won her this class. 2 Allison's Oberitz Firebee. A very nice type, with well set and carried tail, seemed to find the floor hard to cope with unfortunately. 3 Sheasby's Boabab Bubblegum. LB(7) 1 Bradbury's Wychlea Vixen In The Dark. RCC. I thought she was my ticket winner for sure, she is 2 yrs old, black and beautiful. She moved soundly in all directions with a strong rear and a perfectly set and carried tail. She is not a big girl but she certainly has type and style. 2 Chilite Lunar Moon. A 4 yr old gold/cream girl who was a charmer, very sweet head and expression, with a big coat and lovely tail set. She is somewhat overweight which made her move heavily. 3 Hamer's Clarmers Caramel Surprise. OB(9, 2) This was a difficult class, plenty of bitches who looked lovely standing but were then let down by their movement. 1 Serman's Ch Tymy Footsteps. CC & BOB. This girl caught and held my eye the whole time she was in the ring. I always glance over at the waiting dogs in the ring while the table dog gets ready, and this girl never stood badly and always presented a beautiful picture. She is a black of nearly 5 years, she is compact and sturdy with no hint of stuffiness as she has beautifully set upper arm and strong stifles and hocks. This lovely lady presented the perfect picture on the day, and swept all before her to take Best In Show. 2 Garwood's Printzagem's Tantalize. Another very stylish black with a super outline and good reach in profile. She has enough bone and a lovely head, although I would prefer a smaller eye. 3 Chambers' Ch Printzagems Viva La Diva For Musique. Brace (3, 1) Now you may say that a 'brace' should be dogs of the same colour, however, I judged this on the pair that moved and stood together most happily, and in a co-ordinated fashion together. My winners were a black and a brown brace that matched each other for style and movement. 1 Bradbury's Wychlea Faye Ta Complea & Wychlea Vixen In The Dark. 2 Serman's Wychlea Lady In The Mirror By Tymy & Wyndlee Twizzle Stick By Tymy.
