Critique
I would like to thank the Crufts’ Committee for inviting me to judge German Spitz Klein, and I want to thank the exhibitors who brought their dogs under me, I really enjoyed my day. There was a lovely atmosphere around the ring and I had some very impressive dogs to go over. I found a good depth of quality in the Open classes, especially Open Dog, but a few of the boys just wanted their noses on the ground and lost their outlines on the move. There were a few over coated and very short backed dogs with deep stops that looked more Pomeranian than Klein. In a breed described as moderate and almost square, we are not looking for ever more coat, ever shorter backs, even more stop and back skull, because this destroys the balance that we are looking for. So many of the movement faults I saw today were caused by too upright fronts paired with well angulated rears, this leads to the dog moving on two tracks, or flipping the front feet in the air to get them out of the way of the back feet. Often a dog who is a bit upright all through will move better, because it is balanced. I am proud to be part of this lovely breed, and heartened to see the young ones who will be taking the breed forward in due time.
Vet D (3,1) 1 RCC and BVIB Francis and Pearce’s Ch Longsdale’s Willie Win JW. 11 year old dark cream boy who still has all his teeth, he has a good masculine head with a dark eye and pigment and an appealing expression. He has a compact well ribbed body, strong short loin, and he is well boned with lovely feet, this combined with his firm muscular body produced good movement in all directions, he belies his age. 2 Trendle’s Lusam Cheeky Boy. This big and glamorous pale gold boy is nearly 8, not showing his age as he moved well around the ring, he has a lovely gold coat and such a happy disposition.
PGD (4,1) 1 Barnes & Wheaton’s Galvizach Mandala at Daraydala. Brown and white parti-colour, three years old, sporting a big, well presented coat with good texture to it. His head is evenly marked and very attractive with an alert expression, he has good dentition and neat ears. His body is compact and well ribbed with a well set tail, he is another big boy but is well balanced and this produced sound and steady profile movement. 2 Dyer’s Longsdale Knightshade at Javarm. A three year old black male who has lovely bone and tight feet. He has a good texture to his coat and a well set tail, he is a little larger in ear than 1, and is not quite as well balanced in angulation. 3 Moore’s Pommary Mark My Word
LD (3) 1 Bradbury & Peck & Davies’ Wychlea Percy Vehere. A three year old black male with lovely substance, good bone and feet and good coat texture. He was one of the boys who seemed a little unsettled on the carpet but when he settled he moved well around the ring presenting a lovely picture, with good head carriage and a well set and carried tail. 2 Moore’s Pommary Let Rumour Begin. A four year old beautifully coloured orange sable dog. He has a heavy coat which concealed his outline, as he is quite short in back.. He has an attractive masculine head, good ear set and good bone. I would like more rear angulation.
OD (9,1) Firstly, I have to say what a class this was, I had to sit down for a minute just to look at them all. 1 Grayer’s Ch Radajasas Henri Fiocca at Delgray. A fabulous young dog with so much more to come, he stands in the ring rather like a Prince, so proud and so handsome with the perfect amount of attitude! His head is stunning, he has the desired oval eye, and the darkest pigment, he has a broad nearly flat skull and a beautiful spitz wedge shape to his head. It is wonderful to see a ‘moderate’ dog that is so eye-catching and balanced. 2 Francis & Pearce Ch Longsdale’s Blame It On Me. This three year old dark cream is compact and short coupled without being too short. He has a lovely spitz head and expression and good dark pigment and is balanced fore and aft. 3 Chambers’ Ch Musique Born Legacy. Reserve Rogerson’s Ch Nosregor Willhe Surprise Y. Very Highly Commended Jackson & Minshall’s Ch Perrymere Just Bertie
Good Citizen Dog Scheme Dog (1) 1 Trendle’s Lusam Cheeky Boy Vet B (5,1) 1 Francis & Pearce’s Ch Longsdale’s Jen You Win JW ShCM. Well, what an honour to be able to see this girl again. I awarded her a CC at 6 months of age and today awarded her 38th CC, and Best of Breed at 12 years old. So proud to see her shortlisted in the Group. I can only add to all the accolades she has had before, that she is simply special, so balanced, her head, her outstanding body shape and stance, her superb outline. She moved around the ring as if she was a two year old. Thank you so much for bringing her under me. 2 Kettlewhite’s Lusam Spic N Span. A 13 year old lovely blue sable bitch, I really liked her, so attractive, she has a lovely compact shape, a very pretty head and expression and she moved well. 3 Trendle’s Lusam Toodle Pip ShCM. Reserve Godridge’s Lusam Teasy Weasy
JB (2) 1 Shepherd’s Fecimus Having A Giraffe. A 14 month old black sable girl with a very sweet head and expression, her ears are a little large but they do not detract from the picture. She has a well laid shoulder with a matching rear, producing good profile movement, I would love to see her when fully mature. 2 Saunders’ Delgray’s Bootylicious at Brookwell. What a charming girl, not the biggest but she really catches your eye, she is compact with a pretty head and lovely dark pigment and bursting with character.
PGB (1) 1 Rogerson’s Nosregor Sister Sledge. A two year old cream girl of good size, she has a well balanced body, not as compact as some but still correct, she was not in full coat, she has balanced angulation which produced good movement in all directions. A pleasure to see one of our young handlers showing her dog to its advantage.
LB (2) 1 Slack’s Fecimus One of Us. What a pretty girl she is, a three year old orange sable with such a sweet head and expression, her ears looked a shade large as she was not in full coat, but she had enough to show off her virtues, she is quite compact, a little upright in front but with a level topline and a well set tail she presents a beautiful picture, another talented young handler with a lovely partnership with her dog. 2 Shepherd’s Cyfelin Catch A Falling Star for Fecimus. A larger cream girl with a very big coat, she is well balanced all through with good bone and feet, she is a little large in eye but her head is good, not too much rise of back skull, all in all a very nice girl.
OB (10,2) 1 RCC Shepherd’s Fecimus The Good Fairy. A gorgeous, sound, very well constructed girl, 5 years old, such good front movement and good balanced angulation front and rear. She has super straight bone and tight feet. She may not be conventionally ‘pretty’ as she has no mask to set off her face, which is beautiful, and she is a little heavily coated, but when you get your hands on her she is lovely to go over and impressed me a lot. 2 Chamber’s Ch Manzamas Made with Pride (sw Imp). A lovely five year old white girl, out of coat but absolutely nothing to hide. She is compact with a strong level topline and a good length of neck, and a well sprung rib. Her head is very attractive with good dark pigment and an alert expression, she is very well balanced and moved accordingly, pushed 1 hard. 3 Grayer’s Radajasa’s Nancy Wake at Delgray. Reserve Francis & Pearce Orku Hermione Granger with Longsdale (Imp Isl). Very Highly Commended Ferry’s Longsdale’s Little Bird with Ferrybelle.
Good Citizen Dog Scheme Bitch (2) 1 Kettlewhite’s PlaceLusam Spic N Span. 2 Trendle’s Lusam Toodle Pip ShCM. A lovely wolf sable girl who is a pocket rocket, she was in good coat and moved briskly around the ring, unlucky to meet 1.
