Critique
Delighted to be invited to judge at the breed club show, and am grateful to the society and my co-judge, Mike Vines for accommodating a switch of the breeds between us, when I was offered kleins with CC later in the year. As ever I thoroughly enjoyed my day judging the breed, the exhibitors are some of the friendliest you can meet in the show scene and are genuinely pleased with each other’s successes. It was a very well run show and my steward Ruth Kimber kept the ring running smoothly. Overall I found more depth in quality and type in the dogs, and always interesting when reading back through the catalogue to see a theme/line running through a number of winners. I found that ears were set a little wide in many, the standard does ask for small set on high, but many were wide set like a lapphund. I think breeders have done well to improve the angulation, and this showed with generally good movement.
VD (3,0) 1. Hewett’s CH SPELLCAST TALK TO ME JW, solid black 9 Years old, and in the condition of a dog half his age. Love his correct wedge head, flat broad skull, balanced muzzle. Dark oval eye, neat well set ears. In excellent coat, strong masculine bone throughout , compact in profile and moves well. A real showman and hard to deny him top honours, RBD and BVIS. 2. Jones’ SPELLCAST URBAN LEGEND WITH RUNESTONE, my notes say similar type, and not surprised to see he is from repeat mating of the winner. Very similar in head, with broad flat skull, correct wedge shape, dark eye. Compact in body and good size. Not quite as positive on move as older brother. 3. Thomas’ DESARIA DARBY FOR DARAYDALA, smaller male of impressive 13y, head shape less defined than 1&2 as is typical with age, would have just preferred more width to skull and strength in muzzle. Attractive in profile but would like little more reach of neck to complete balance. Moved well.
MPD (1,0) 1. Hamer’s BORNDOWNDA TALKING HEADS OF CLARMER, stood alone, but to me stood out for his quality and balance. Only 8 months old but very balanced, loved outline, compact body, good bone and in good coat with excellent presentation. Very good tail set with correct tightly curled tail. Very well angulated and with good reach of neck, both contributing to good movement. Head shows his age, v promising in shape but needs to broaden, lovely dark eye and shape. One to watch, BP & BPIS.
PD (4,2) 1.Godridge’s FLAMUNA MANI, v promising, excellent coat and of good size and bone. V well set tail well curled. Head is promising, flat skull and high set ears, but prefer little more definition of stop, and less round eye. Well angulated and moves well. RBPIS. 2. Taylor’s ZEPHON STORMCHASING, rawer pup, has grown in height and is little unbalanced at this age. Correct dark oval eye, but prefer shorter stronger muzzle to complete wedge. Not as well defined angulation as the winner, which showed on move, as less reach and rather loose. Excellent coat and presentation.
JD (4,0) 1. Orr’s SOBRIETY JACK DANIELS, stood out as class winner for shape and maturity. Good size, good angulation, in excellent coat, well set tail, strong boned. Correct wedge head, balanced muzzle and flat skull, would prefer more oval eye, and being picky ears could be set higher. Moved very well. 2. GRIZWOLD LOHENGRIN AT DRUITZ, smaller male, very much a junior being between coats. Compact body, ok for angulation, well boned, correct set of tail. Head attractive shape but eyes little too round, correct high set ears. Moved well from front but little close behind. 3. Day’s SOBRIETY’S BORN TO BE WILD, another that needs time to mature up as is typical at this age. Head is promising, defined wedge, but ear set rather wide. Well set tail, short back, ok for angulation. Moved close.
PGD (5,1) 1. Beard’s WYNDLEE JESTER, v attractive deep brown colour, excellent coat and presentation. Attractive wedge shaped head, masculine with broad skull and muzzle, correct stop, being picky would prefer ears little higher set. Short back, well boned, moved well. 2. Clayton’s STUDHOLME DARK MOON, bigger male, longer in back. Attractive head, broad flat skull, correct wedge defined. Well set tail, moved ok. 3. Saich’s ZEPHON AKIO AT LINDCOLY, smaller male in excellent coat and beautifully presented, found him carrying excess weight over shoulder and lacked front angulation to make look little stuffy. Muzzle needs to be strong and filled more under eye to give correct wedge shape.
LD (7,0) 1. Hewett’s SPELLCAST SHOUT ABOUT IT, another very nice dog from same sire as VD winners, good size and well balanced, square in outline. Very typical wedge head, broad flat skull strong balanced muzzle, correct eye. Moved well. 2. Swani’s SPELLCAST TEAM TALK, half brother to 1, very attractive male and excellently put down, in super condition. Compact in outline, excellent bone, preferred his head in fact to winner but just found him little unsettled on table and not always showing 100%. Moved v well. 3. Clayton’s STUDHOLME KISS OF OZZ, excellent in profile, short back, high set tail, attractive cream. Head not as defined as 1 & 2, would prefer more strength to muzzle and shorter back skull. Ears are well set but little long.
OD (6,1) 1. Smith’s CH SPELLCAST JIVE TALKING, loved this boy for his type and balance. Solid black in excellent coat. Well boned and good size, son of the VD winner. Well balanced throughout and has the correct wedge head, broad skull strong muzzle well filled under eye, ears could be closer set if being picky. Short firm back, high set tail, excellent movement, and strongest mover of the day. BD/BOB & RBIS. 2. Chamber’s CH MUSIQUE WORTH THE WAIT, smaller dog, but excellent type, in super coat and well presented. Well boned and has correct attractive wedge head with dark oval eye and high set ears. Tended to crab slightly on move though was sound and looked good in profile. 3. Jones’ FLAMUNA REVELATIONS AT RUNESTONE ShCM, attractive wolf sable dog in excellent coat and ain beautifully presented and handled. Good bone and size. Attractive head, flat skull, good eye shape and colour. Not quite the reach on the move as 1&2.
VB(3,2) 1. Hall’s SPILMAH AFFAIR TOB AT PUFNSTUF, very showy particolour, in excellent coat and well boned. Just carrying little extra weight which affected her front movement. Would prefer a slightly flatter skull.
MPB (1) 1. Thomas’ DARAYDALA LOLA, at 6 months very much a baby, though very well schooled. Correct bone and angulation, moves well in profile and going away but little wide in front.
PB (2,0) 1. Saich’s ZEPHON THE THUNDERSTORM AT LINDCOLY, correct shape in profile, well set tail. Lovely confident attitude. Head is promising but head to develop as expect at this age. Needs to strengthen in front on move.
JB (1,0) 1. Thomas’ LYSEBOURNE AASHA, compact feminine bitch, cream between coats but well presented. Feminine head, well developed wedge head with fat skull good muzzle and lovely eye shape and colour. Another with lovely character. Moved ok, would just like a little more of her.
PGB (7,2) 1.Pooley’s SPELLCAST TALKING SECRETS WITH AZKABAN, lovely bitch in profile, perhaps little longer in back than some, but can forgive in bitch, well boned and excellent coat and presentation. Very typical wedge head, flat skull, ears well set; being picky eyes could be more oval. Very good angulation and moved very well. 2. Alfred’s ROSSFORT BLACK GIRL AT TEAMOR, another lovely type of bitch, excellent coat. Very good head, correct shape, flat skull good eye, alert. Angulation good but moved rather loose in front. 3. Beard’s WYNDLEE JENNY, lovely deep brown, rather less mature than 1&2. Very promising head, good skull and eye shape & colour. Has excellent bone.
LB (8,5) 1. Clayton’s STUDHOLME KISS OF FIRE, very attractive cream, lovely shape in outline and has super coat. Very good angulation, reach of neck and high set tail. Very feminine head, correct wedge , flat skull and good fill under eye. Correct eye shape and dark colour. Firm topline. Moved well from all angles, BB. 2. Clewer’s SPELLCAST TELL A TAIL AT BULLBO, attractive in profile with short firm back, good coat and bone. Expression spoilt a little by large wide set ears. Moved ok behind but very wide in chest. 3. Conway & Oakden’s MACPAWS ROXY REBEL, not the classic wedge head that I like, found her ears large and wide set and would prefer more oval eye. Moved ok in profile but very wide in front.
OB (7,2) 1. Orr’s CH PUFNSTUF PUT A SPELL ON YOU AT SOBRIETY, lovely quality bitch, by same sire as VD winner, excellent shape in outline, short back, excellent bone. Lovely head, flat skull, good ear placement and eye shape/colour. In excellent coat. Good angulation. V close decision with limit winner for BB, hardest call of the day. Just felt at times this bitch tended to toe in slightly, RBB. 2. William’s CH DRUITZ FOLLOW THAT DREAM, brown bitch who has lovely compact shape in profile, very good angulation. Correct high set tail. Attractive head, excellent ear size and set, good eye, would like muzzle little shorter. Very sound and free moving. Not in full coat on day but shown and well presented. 3. Orr’s CH ROSSFORT ANDANTE WITH SOBRIETY JW, correct compact shape well off for bone. Excellent tail set and very good coat. Head shape is good and pigment excellent but expression spoilt by eye shape.
As my BOB was owned by the daughter of my co-judge, awarding BIS fell to our referee, Mrs Hazel Fitzgibbon, who awarded BIS to the klein, CH LONGSDALES JEN YOU WIN JW SHCM, and RBIS to the mittel, CH SPELLCAST JIVE TALKING, BPIS was the mittel, BORNDOWNDA TALKING HEADS OF CLARMER, with RBPIS to FLAMUNA MANI, BVIS was the mittel, CH SPELLCAST TALK TO ME JW
